Companies forced to pay to file accounts

The government has announced that from April 1, 2026, companies will no longer be able to use HMRC and Companies House’s free online services to file their accounts and tax returns.

Key Changes:

1. Filing with HMRC after March 2026:

Companies must use approved commercial software to submit tax returns.

If your business already uses bookkeeping software, check if it includes a module for filing tax returns. Otherwise, you’ll need to purchase separate software.

You don’t need to switch to a bookkeeping app if you prefer keeping financial records manually.

2. Filing with Companies House after March 2026:

You can either send a paper copy of your accounts or use commercial software.

Some software might be compatible with both HMRC and Companies House, so check before purchasing.

3. Accessing previously filed accounts and tax returns:

After March 31, 2026, you must follow a specific process to view copies of your past filings.

What You Need to Do:

Research and buy approved accounting software before April 2026.

If you already use a bookkeeping app, check if it supports online filing.

If you prefer paper filing for Companies House, ensure you’re prepared for manual submissions.

This change primarily impacts small and micro businesses that rely on free filing services.

Using an accountant is a sure way to ensure you meet your filing requirements!
